Hello Sparklers!
My name is Cassie Smith and I am the new Public Relations Specialist for the
Shimmer Sparkle Shine Project! I am so excited to be working with this project
because it is something I truly care about. I want to take some time to tell
you about myself and share my story.
I recently graduated from the University of
Northern Colorado with a degree in International Relations and a minor in
Spanish. I love coffee, corgis, social media and reading biographies about
early American politicians (mostly Alexander Hamilton). I have always been
unique and I love that about myself!
Ciara (the
founder) and I went to high school together. We have been friends for years! I
remember her telling me about her non-profit and being very proud of what she
was doing. I was invited to volunteer at a workshop for the first time this
year as a favor to my old friend. At this workshop I had a conversation with a
few unruly twelve-year-old about Photoshop. It shocked me how much this lesson
effected these girls. They told me that nobody in their lives had ever had this
conversation with them. No one had ever told them that the people in media did
not reflect real women. They asked me, “why does it have to be this way?”. That
question hit me the hardest because I didn’t have an answer. In reality, I had
been asking that for years.
That is when I
realized how important teaching young girls about self-worth is. I decided that
I wanted to help the Shimmer Sparkle Shine Project share their message as far
as it could go. That is why I approached Ciara and asked her how I can help her
with this mission. That is when we created my position! I am so excited to be
working with the amazing group that makes this non-profit possible.
